Gold Mining in GhanaMISSION STATEMENT
In 1978, founders of the Institute for Cultural Ecology began introducing an Earth-friendly process called "ecological mining" whereby damaged waterways are restored through new techniques of mining. As part of the GoldBusters campaign, Rainforest Information Centre is working with ICE to form the Coalition for Green Gold, a group of NGOs and local mining groups who work to introduce ecological mining processes and methods of certification.
The Coalition for Green Gold:
* Develops pilot eco-mining projects to introduce ecologically and socially benign technologies to small communities involved in small scale placer mining.
* Aims to institutionalize the requirements for certified green gold
* Aims to produce the first ecologically certified gold coin. All proceeds from the sale of this coin will be diverted back towards sustainable community development projects in the communities involved with the pilot projects.
* Current members of the coalition are the Institute for Cultural Ecology, NeoSynthesis Research Center (NSRC), Pacific Environment & Resource Center & Rainforest Information Centre
