Diana
Ah Naid
... began writing songs when she
was nine. She grew up fast, living an unusual lifestyle, after the death
of her mother, travelling from town to town with her father and two brothers.
After a long childhood involving children's homes, foster parents, charity
organisations, food vouchers and freaks - often on the run from authority
but with nowhere to go, Diana settled down in Northern NSW in her early
teens. After a year of college in Canberra Diana became pregnant and moved
back to the mid North coast with her partner and gave birth to their son,
Stone. Several years later, after painfully honing her unique, self taught
guitar style and having, sporadically, performed around the district, Diana
borrowed the money needed for her to record an album from a very supportive
friend.
Diana recorded and produced
the album in Byron Bay, made 500 copies of her first self titled album
in time to launch it at her twenty first birthday party held at a community
hall in Nimbin on April 17th 1997. Diana sent a copy of her album to Triple
J in Sydney where Richard Kingsmill played the first track off
the album, "I GO Off", on the Australian Music show. After much
feedback within the ranks of Triple J and a national buzz from rowdy teenagers
the station soon rang Diana and advised her they were adding "I Go Off"
to their playlist.
Within days Diana Ah Naid
was known throughout the land for her remarkable, in your face vocal
style, her acoustic guitar bashing and her brazen song about
how she ‘goes off’. Not only did she start getting countless phone calls
from prospective record buyers but also publishers, managers and record
companies started calling. Diana had offers coming from left, right
and centre.
Diana signed up with independent
music company ORiGiN, who released "I Go Off" nationally
early in June 97. The song went on to become a National
Top 40 hit single. more....
